Grain Accounting Manager


Location: Based in Red Oak, IA

Classification: Full-Time Salaried Position

Purpose: Initiate and develop strong relationships with buyers and sellers of UFC grain through meaningful presentation of grain marketing programs and accurate oversight of all incoming and outgoing grain transactions. Successful grain accounting managers will present solutions, marketing options and other services, communication, and the total value of United Farmers Cooperative, at all times, to current and potential customers. The role primarily consists of supervising grain accounting staff at all UFC locations across south western Iowa.

Continues to grow personal knowledge of the grain industry, United Farmers Cooperative locations and services and the Cooperative business model to improve product recommendations and services to the Cooperative's customers.


Increase Grain Department efficiency and accuracy which will, in turn, increase customer satisfaction and employee retention. Collaborate continually with the Grain Department Manager to develop and implement strategies developed from interactions with grain sellers and buyers to grow the UFC grain departments book of business while maintaining continual exemplary data funneling to the Corporate Financial Officer.


Report activities to the Grain Department Manager and CFO on a regular basis, to achieve the goals of the position and the company efficiently and effectively. Constantly update and assist location managers and grain accounting personnel product offerings, seasonal production issues, and promotional programs. Partner with Marketing Manager and utilize all sales tools such as accounting software, customer data software program and other business solutions to enhance customer relationship for performance.

Draw upon the resources of each end user of customer grain to fully support customers' needs. Become an unbiased expert about what offerings and strategies best suit the needs of UFC's customers. Work closely and collaboratively with location managers and the grain accounting team to communicate customer needs and assure customer expectations are met. Facilitate connections between the other department members of UFC to positively enhance customers' production by utilizing everything UFC has to offer.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: may include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Ensure all grain regulatory federal and state compliance and licensing regulations are met at all UFC locations
  • Oversee and/or perform all grain accounting functions of the company, learning, utilizing and teaching software programs used by the company, supervision, customer service, upholding the cooperative’s credit policy and other duties as assigned by the Grain Department Manager and the CFO
  • Learn to understand current customers and prospects needs to be able to market grain products and services to enhance customers business ROI for the best performance oft the cooperative
  • Assist department managers and staff with accounting procedures and marketing activities to enhance the accuracy, efficiency and performance of the grain accounting team.
  • Work with the team to facilitate excellent customer service across multiple locations
  • Assist in determining best daily bids and monitor competitive bids as needed
  • Maintain ability to operate and oversee a high-volume grain scale, including weighing, probing and accurately grading both inbound and outbound grain
  • Oversee the transfer of all transactions into the grain accounting software system
  • Accurately communicate company grain position to the Grain Department Manager as well as grain inventory pricing to the CFO
  • Supervise grain accounting support staff at all UFC locations
  • Manage, assist and always be prepared for State and Federal Grain Exams
  • Communicate expectations clearly to all grain accounting staff and will maintain a positive attitude that promotes teamwork within the cooperative and a favorable image of the cooperative
  • Resolve all inquiries from customers and vendors in a timely manner
  • Participate in training opportunities as it relates to the requirements of the position
  • Regional travel will be required to properly train staff


  • Valid Iowa Driver's license with good driving record.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting and 3 or more years’ experience in grain accounting with a high-volume enterprise and the ability to provide leadership, problem solving and planning for company growth strategies.
  • Demonstrate strong communication and business skills
  • Strong work ethic with the ability/ experience to balance agricultural industry working time needs and personal life
  • Proven self-starter with the ability to learn cooperative guidelines to form fast and strong business relationships.
  • Strong computer skills are a must with the ability to quickly learn new software applications.
